Arbutus is an artistic community based in Montreal. Beginning as a DIY loft space, Arbutus Records developed to cultivate and promote the bands associated with the space. Emphasis on friendship and collaboration within the scene has lead to an increasingly multimedia oriented endeavor, moving beyond a label to include film and literature.

Arbutus develops a scene and culture, with each memberŐs success contributing to the success of the whole. Individual talents combine for a stronger product and artistic identity. We are not bound by a particular aesthetic direction, but rather excel in the diversity created by this cross pollination. The artists involved are pointedly distinct from one another, and this range of individual input results as one of strongest qualities presented in the art.

We are not an archetypical record label, rather Arbutus is the vessel for a scene and artistic movement.

Born in 1999, Asthmatic Kitty Records was originally conceived as a platform for musical projects by a community of artists from Holland, Michigan, a small city on the shore of Lake Michigan. Some were Holland natives, and others had come to attend local colleges and universities. While the original Holland nucleus has now dispersed to various parts of the country, the fellowship is still growing, with new friends and shared projects with other independent labels. Asthmatic Kitty is now based in Lander, Wyoming, Indianapolis, Indiana and New York City.

Asthmatic Kitty was named after Sara, a voluptuous orange and white longhair who wandered out of the woods in 1995, pregnant, starving, and afflicted with various parasites and ailments, including feline asthma. Although she still wheezes a bit, especially when being chased by her sister Tabby, Sara today enjoys a healthy and happy life of luxury. Cast-off animals make the best pets!

Awesome Tapes From Africa began in 2006 as an mp3 blog shedding light on wonderful and obscure cassettes from the African continent. It has grown into an internationally recognized, crowd-sourced public archive and acclaimed DJ project. Founder Brian Shimkovitz began by digitizing and blogging about cassettes he brought back from trips to West Africa and has since received tapes from fans and contributors, creating an extensive online repository for popular, traditional and folkloric musics from dozens of countries.

The New York Times, The Guardian, The Fader, WIRE, ArtForum, Rolling Stone, BBC Radio 6, Village Voice, and New York Magazine, among others, have noted the project for its enthusiastic and open-armed approach to sharing otherwise hard-to-find music with listeners worldwide. In the process, numerous artists previously unheard outside their native regions have found fans via Awesome Tapes From Africa.

The Olivia Tremor Control originated in Louisiana around 1988 as the trio of Will Cullen Hart, Bill Doss, and Jeff Mangum. They ended up in Athens, Georgia around 1992 and recorded the "California Demise" EP which they released themselves on seven-inch vinyl.

After a while Jeff Mangum left to focus on his band Neutral Milk Hotel, and another Louisiana native, John Fernandes joined the group to play bass, clarinet, and violin, and they recorded the prelude to their first album called "The Giant Day" EP.

Soon the band convinced Eric Harris, who had played with Bill in Chocolate USA, to move to Athens to join the band as drummer, thereminist, electronics expert and recording engineer. In 1996, their debut double album "Music from the Unrealized Film Script, Dusk at Cubist Castle" was assembled in the Denver-based studio of childhood friend Robert Schneider.

After it's release, Peter Erchick, who had grown up with Eric in New Jersey, joined the group to play organ and piano, and they exhaustively toured North America and Europe opening for the Super Furry Animals, Beck, Stereolab, R.E.M. and Derek Bailey, as well as many tours with Elephant 6 comrades Neutral Milk Hotel, the Music Tapes, the Apples, Elf Power, etc.

Following the tours for their 1999 album, "Black Foliage: Animation Music", the band went on hiatus to focus on various projects. They did some reunion shows in 2005 starting with an invitiation from the All Tomorrow's Parties festival and ending with a joyful noise at the Orange Twin conservation community.

Constellation was founded by Don Wilkie and Ian Ilavsky in Montreal in 1997 to provide a conduit for local and regional artists making genre-defying DIY music.

Throughout the label's first decade, we strictly worked with projects based in Montreal and eastern Canada, with a commitment to packaging-intensive LP and CD production as well as support for parallel institutions (recording studio, live venues) that evolved separately and allowed for a true renewal of the Montreal music scene well beyond the confines of the Constellation orbit.

Earning the wholly unexpected (and not entirely desired) distinction as a leading purveyor of "post-rock" - thanks to an early crop of highly varied instrumental albums by bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Do Make Say Think, Fly Pan Am, Exhaust, Hangedup, Re: and Silver Mt. Zion - Constellation gained a foothold in independent international distribution very early on, and we've sought to assert our broader musical horizons and ethical/artistic pre-occupations ever since. Ian also played in Silver Mt. Zion and Re: from 2001-2008.

In recent years, the label has supported established American iconoclasts (Vic Chesnutt, Carla Bozulich's Evangelista project, Jem Cohen, The Dead Science) while continuing to champion fresh crops of wildly diverse Montreal-based artists (Clues, Elfin Saddle, Land Of Kush, Hrsta, Colin Stetson) and some of the leading lights of the avant singer-songwriter Toronto scene (Eric Chenaux, Sandro Perri).

From the label's very beginnings, Constellation worked hand-in-hand with the Southern Records distribution network created by John Loder in the early 80s (initially to manufacture and distribute Crass records, and soon to include Dischord, Touch & Go, Wrong, et al). Since Loder's death in 2005, the various arms of the Southern network were unwound in various ways. We remained loyal to all these parties, including Chicago Independent Distribution (CID) as it emerged out of the former Southern Records USA. In autumn of 2010, CID announced they were scaling back their distribution business to focus on the local economies of a brick and mortar record store and live venue at their building on West Fullerton Street in Chicago. We remain extremely supportive of their efforts, deeply thankful for their hard work, and excited about their future.

We are equally excited to be forging a new alliance with Secretly Canadian Distribution (and proud to be properly cementing the "Canadian" into their solid foundations). We look forward to being part of the label group at SCD and building new relationships with everyone involved.

Don and Ian continue to be fully hands-on with all aspects of the day-to-day at Constellation. Don't hesitate to drop us a line.

Family Vineyard is an artist-centric label based in Indianapolis. It was established in 1999 to release uncompromising and iconoclast visions from all corners of the globe. Since, we've produced landmark albums by guitarist Loren Connors, percussionist Chris Corsano, lysergic punks Apache Dropout and saxophonists Akira Sakata and Paul Flaherty. Our motto is "Newfangled and archival sounds aged to perfection."

"... Family Vineyard occupy a particular corner of the music universe, serving up equal parts talent, ambition and pretension from people who don't shrink from the word 'artist' and who make honest, blood-leaking efforts to be worthy of the name." ŃJohn Darnielle in Last Plane to Jakarta

Ghostly's current roster is vast and its alumni are many, but an abridged list of label's artistry ranges from the darkly playful electronic pop of Matthew Dear to the moody, humanly warm electronic sounds of Gold Panda from the reality-bending hip-hop of Dabrye to the sky-high orchestral anthems of Denmark's Choir of Young Believers to the rainy-day minimalism of The Sight Below to Detroit's electropunk pioneers ADULT. Collaborators have included Doom, Flying Lotus, J Dilla, Jesu, Lawrence, Legowelt, and countless others. Ghostly's visual presence is as distinctive as its music, defined primarily by the work of on-staff designers/fine artists Michael Cina and Will Calcutt.

To define Ghostly International would only serve to limit it. Always evolving, always incorporating new sounds and new facets to its cultural identity, Ghostly still maintains its bottom line: to bring great art to people with open eyes and open ears.

Based in Portland, OR. and run by the husband and wife team of Adam and Sara Padgett Heathcott, Hometapes brings unparalleled enthusiasm and imagination to our record spinning party. We'll be seeing and hearing a lot more from Hometapes over the duration of 2010 and beyond as their ever-growing roster includes Bear In Heaven, Pattern Is Movement, Megafaun, CYNE, All Tiny Creatures, and Slaraffenland.

Sara was recently interviewed about Hometapes' growth and experiences. Here's a snippet of the Hometapes tale:

Q: The label's website boasts an intriguing mission statement: Hometapes = music, art, and everything else. Please explain.

A: Hometapes, when it began, was akin to a gut reaction. It wasn't a business decision - it was a need. After years of making, doing, seeing, and hearing, Adam and I found ourselves both knowledgeable and curious. We knew enough to dive in and see if we could take our friends' music and art to ears beyond our bedrooms, our hometowns. We were devoted to the culture of physical music - record stores, merch tables, distros at music fests, even music trading online - and we wanted to have a voice in a scene we traveled in. That desire to have a voice, to contribute, is the foundation of the "everything else" in our mission statement. We have always worked alongside people who feel the same way, and, between writing, rehearsing, practicing, painting, printing, designing, promoting, selling, and driving, there's a culture there. A world. A group of people who feel a certain way about life...

K: a conspiracy of gravediggers, spies, swim instructors and international pop stars. There are hangmen and there are saints. K as a label has released cassettes, phonograph records and compact discs documenting the audio works of over 150 artists. The main focus K of has been artists working in and around Olympia, Washington, where K is based, but has included comrades from across the U.S.A. and as far away as Japan, Scotland, Australia, Canada, Germany and England. Yes, K explodes the teenage underground into passionate revolt against the corporate ogre world-wide.

Colleagues in the International Pop Underground collide at the K vanishing point. The sounds cross back and forth through a number of genres, some known and some less so: punk, hip hop, atom-powered folk-pop, haunted garage, restless singer songwright, epic soul shock, noise exp., blurred-eye visionary psychedelica, roadhouse mod and the silent film soundtracks composed by Timothy Brock, as performed by the Olympia Chamber Orchestra.

No Quarter was founded in 2002 with a reissue of the long out of print Earth album, Sunn Amps and Smashed Guitars. Another reissued soon followed, a discography of the amazing late 90's post-post rock bandLaddio Bolocko. Critically acclaimed ("Beautiful, captivating and wonderfully overwhelming" - CMJ), the release sold well and helped put the label on the map. New albums followed from Finnish bands Pharaoh Overlord and Circle, New Yorkers Coptic Light and The Psychic Paramount (the latter comprised of ex-Laddio Bolocko members) and a collection of Earth remixes by some of the heaviest hitters in the biz (Mogwai, Autechre, Justin Broadrick). Relocating to New York in 2008, NQ issued a solid string of albums by Endless Boogie, Headdress, Final and Doug Paisley. 2010 will see follow ups from theBoogie, Paisley and The Psychic Paramount, debuts from Coconuts and Suzannah Johannes, and of course there's more in the works. Always more in the works.

RVNG Intl. is a Brooklyn-based record label that operates on few but heavily fortified principals, dealing with forward-reaching artists sometimes categorized as electronic, avant, free, fried, etc.

In this era of cloud storage and media streams, RVNG seeks not only to appease collector fandom with extravagant packaging but also to remind later and hopeful audiophile generations of the sonic spectacle that exists in pressing needle to vinyl and letting physical exchange excite surrounding air space. Of course we're not total curmudgeons, our catalogue is (almost) fully available across digital formats.

Our FRKWYS series best exemplifies the equilibrium that balances classic sentimentality with modern day sensibility, with each volume a unification of progenitor and contemporary musician. Those artists working outside the FRKWYS umbrella on original releases for RVNG still find collaboration the driver at the label as we work closely to activate each new level of artistic development.

With a quick glance at our catalogue of events, releases, and community at large, it's (hopefully) clear that RVNG is a creative member in our homezone of NYC and beyond. Supporting the scene with collaborations at White Columns' West Village gallery, helping present MoMa PS1's Summer Warm Up series in Long Island City, working extensively with Krakow's Unsound Festival, or curating a Carnegie Mellon University stage for the VIVA Festival in Pittsburgh, PA, format transcendence is our second life-force.

Sacred Bones Records was born in Brooklyn, New York in early 2007 with the intention of bringing our friends' music to light, as well as unearthing music lost to time. Though our releases are available in digital formats, our main focus is on vinyl. We have released almost 50 records (and counting). Our artists include Blank Dogs, Zola Jesus, Gary War and Moon Duo to name a few.

We are deeply fortunate to have a co-operative of gifted people working with us. A filmmaker who directs our music videos, a print maker who handles the production of our complicated packaging and a graphic designer who is responsible for our album layouts, website and one-sheets. We put as much energy and care into the presentation of our records as each band does to their music. Attention to detail and hard work is what distinguishes Sacred Bones from others.

We look forward to continuing to release albums by artists who we truly believe in both aurally and spiritually.
