Portland, Oregon duo Kevin O'Connor and Lisa Molinaro create lush and evocative instrumental soundscapes under the name Talkdemonic. Formed in 2003, Talkdemonic began as Kevin’s pursuit for new frontiers in percussion and analog sound. Lisa joined Kevin shortly thereafter, further shaping Talkdemonic’s innovative style with her rich viola and cello arrangements. Talkdemonic released their 2004 darling début Mutiny Sunshine on Lucky Madison Records. In 2006, Kevin and Lisa went on to sign with Arena Rock Recording Co., releasing both Beat Romantic and Eyes At Half Mast, and garnering critical attention for their ability to pioneer the marriage of strings with unyieldingly strong percussion and inescapable harmony. At times impetuous yet palliative, Talkdemonic’s sound captures the universally intangible, what we wish we to say but cannot find words, a surge and a calm, instrumental modern music at its finest. Talkdemonic finds themselves either touring the country or nesting in the Pacific Northwest, creating arresting music for the masses. Their fourth and perhaps most inventive album “Ruins” will be released on October 4th 2011.
Morning Teleportation: Expanding Anyway
Morning Teleportation formed in 2005 when Bowling Green, KY natives and lifelong friends Travis Goodwin (keyboards), Tres Coker (drums), and Paul Wilkerson (bass) met up with Chicago transplant Tiger Merritt (vocals/guitar), who had just moved to their hometown for college. From the beginning the band has built up a roller coaster of tumultuous rock 'n roll, featuring analog synths, heartfelt vocals, and sudden changes woven through psychedelia, electronica, and deep-space pickin' n' grinnin'. They've spent most of the past year on the road playing for enthusiastic crowds at Bonnaroo and Sasquatch and supporting the likes of The Flaming Lips, Cage The Elephant, and Modest Mouse.
To witness Morning Teleportation's live show is to experience a cacophony of improvisational mayhem draped with melodic twists and turns. Merritt's vocals dart sharply about the frantic, pulsing backbeat held down by the rhythm section, while his spacey fingerstyle guitar prowess embodies a style best described as "finger-trippin." And while their sound may be somewhat more modern than several of their cited heroes (including James Gang and CSNY), you should make no mistake: these are still some boys who want nothing more than to have a good time in the classic rock idiom.
With the combined energy of a basement party, a back-room jam session, and a futuristic hootenanny, Morning Teleportation's raucous, off-kilter explosion of enthusiasm is guaranteed to raise a smile. The band's first album, entitled Expanding Anyway, is out March 2011 on Glacial Pace Recordings.
Marcellus Hall: The First Line
Hailing from Minnesota, Marcellus Hall arrived in New York in the 1990s to form Railroad Jerk, an industrial grunge-folk band whose four LPs on Matador Records helped define the era. With trademark absurdist yet poignant lyrics, Hall went on to form (with drummer Dave Varenka) White Hassle, a duo with guitar, harmonica and drums that pre-dated the White Stripes and the Black Keys. Releasing albums on Orange Recordings (U.S.), Fargo Records (France) and Mazri (Japan) ? as well as touring Europe ? White Hassle incorporated a thereminist, a second guitarist and a DJ at its live shows before disbanding in 2006.
Hall then embarked on a solo incarnation that enlisted the talents of Damon Smith on bass, Matt Martin on keyboard and Jimmy Ansourian on drums. The quartet (aka Marcellus Hall & The Hostages) played shows in and around New York while recording songs for what would eventually become The First Line LP on Glacial Pace Recordings. Mike Shapiro replaced Jimmy Ansourian in 2010 and the band continues to write and record.
Simultaneously Hall pursues a career as an illustrator, racking up a list of clients that includes The New Yorker, The Atlantic and The New York Times. He has also begun illustrating children’s books. A 44-page book of Hall’s art accompanies the new LP on Glacial Pace Recordings.
Mimicking Birds: Mimicking Birds
What started out as a solo project under the moniker Neight (a portmanteau of 'Nate' and 'eight') has evolved into the trio now known as Mimicking Birds. Originally from Portland, OR, flock lead man Nate Lacy initially learned to play guitar during his senior year in high school. Shortly after graduating, he moved south to Eugene, OR for two years and began writing music. Once he became acquainted with a Yamaha 16-track digital recorder, Nate began recording his songs while playing all of the instruments himself.Recently, Nate was joined by his childhood friends, drummer Aaron Hanson, whose talent is constructing spacious, purposeful beats while Tim Skellenger, being the least structured musician in the band brings a lighthearted and buoyant sound on guitar.
Think ethereal melodies by way of cosmic folk. Nate masters the use of reverb to create ambient sounds. Accompanied by a voice so delicate and seraphic, Mimicking Birds play lachrymose songs that synchronously evoke warm-heartedness and an overall compassion for life without coming off dilettante or sending you an invitation to a pity party. It's the band you find out about, listen to incessantly, want so much to keep a secret, but can't resist the urge to play for everyone you know.
