ALBUM DESCRIPTION

It was an idea hatched during a Nov 7th birthday brunch for Kid Millions by Showtime. We would create a Stax-like studio band based around Oneida's now defunct Ocropolis studio. We would record and produce one song each from a list of our favorite local musicians - the sky was the limit. We both realized that we had about 2 years left in our amazing paradise of a recording studio and while we had done a lot... we still hadn't really taken full advantage of the studio. We hadn't made good on our mandate to become a resource for the community of musicians with whom we shared a home. Unlike many of the half-baked ideas which emerge from the Brah Records boardroom - this one had legs. We quickly abandoned the idea of being Brooklyn's backing band and decided that straight recordings - kind of a Brooklyn waterfront Peel session - would be a better and more interesting goal. Bands would be given four hours to set up and record their track and then allotted four additional hours for mixing. Even within the imposed limits on the project, we vastly underestimated the time and resources this project would require. We also kept adding bands; we couldn't say no. After all was said and done, twenty two bands recorded material over the course of three months in 2010. We mixed about half of these and then we burned out. Everything stopped. I can't even remember why - but about 12 sessions remained in the can, untouched. Cut to about a year later, the Ocropolis's imminent destruction looming, and our shame at setting aside the project drove us back into the studio to finish. We had to cut a couple tracks from the comp for copyright reasons - so we're left with 20. All bands generously agreed to donate proceeds from the compilation to two Japanese charities (Ashinaga and JOICFP) picked for us by Shinji Masuko from DMBQ and Boredoms. So welcome to Koozies, Woodies and Beer - An Ocropolis Japan Benefit Project. NOTES: A Koozie is a foam insulator used to keep your beer (or alternative beverage cold). Required for all beers consumed at the Ocropolis. A Woodie is the Oneida name for an electric combo organ from the 60s and 70s. It must contain some wood. The Ocropolis probably contains at least 20. TRACKLIST: Liturgy - Tragic Laurel // Akron Family - Out To Love // Sloppy Heads - Resistance, Baby! // Knyfe Hyts - We Know When the Sun Goes Down // Fireworks - Sheets of Easter // Noveller - Bleached Beach // Oakley Hall - Puppets on the Wheel // Wingdale Community Singers - So What // Audrey Chen - Squalling // DubKnowDub - Dubcropolis Dub // Zombi - Escape Velocity // Birdlaw - Attention Survivor // Samara Lubelski & Marcia Bassett - Energy Amiss // Chaw Mank - Still Yetting // Mark Morgan - Take It In Trade // Notekillers - Braindance 'Splosion // Red Dawn II - Killed by a Murderer // Christy & Emily - Japanese T-shirt // White Hills - Spiritual Warfare

ALBUM DESCRIPTION

The health of any economy is in large part measured by the amount of import and export that crosses its borders. The cultural economy is no different. In celebration of this concept Asthmatic Kitty has decided to highlight the Indianapolis music scene via Jookabox, looking at both local and non-local musical companions. The first in this two volume set of 7"s, EXPORT is a collection of four songs by four Indianapolis native bands. Here the raw post-industrial sound of beautifully messy rock-n-roll is examined from four distinct points of views. The artwork for this limited edition 7" celebrates the Indianapolis city flag.

Various Artists / Encyclopedia Asthmatica: Encyclopedia Asthmatica Vol. 2

ALBUM DESCRIPTION

Released in 2008, the first volume of Encyclopedia Asthmatica captured a chapter of Asthmatic Kitty's lifespan, a golden-era DIY video spontaneity but in other ways rough and untried. The second volume of the The Encyclopedia Asthmatica, which the label will release later this year, picks up where the previous volume left off, but demonstrates a new level of sophistication in its visualizations. It blasts off into space to chart the boundless cosmos of the World of Asthmatica. Previously uncharted constellations are revealed in their strange and complex beauty. The Denture Nebula, the Totem Grandus, Camp Fire Tangle, and many others are mapped to capture the ethereal sounds and sights the Asthmatica family. Equal parts celestial guide and family photo album, Encyclopedia Asthmatica Vol. 2 shows the growth and maturing of each family member in their musical efforts while upping the ante on its visual representations. We hope you will add this to your collection as a reference resource for audio and eye delights. This collection includes videos from most of the Asthmatic Kitty family, including Sufjan Stevens, My Brightest Diamond (including new previously unreleased video), DM Stith, Fol Chen, Castanets, Jookabox and more!

ALBUM DESCRIPTION

Nearly all of the Asthmatic Kitty Records' roster, and many of their friends, make an appearance somewhere on this DVD: from the playful choreography of the Think Dance Collective frolicing in shoes made of bread to the music of Half-handed Cloud, to the lovely abstraction of Sufjan Stevens' projectionist, Deborah Johnson; from the haunting and raw post-apocalypse video fuzz of live Castanets, to the crisp color footage of My Brightest Diamond at Northsix, there are visual pieces that hopscotch the chasm between the professionalism of a music-visual DVD to the rabid eccentricity of a five-copy, underground video-zine.

David Shrigley / Various Artists: Worried Noodles

ALBUM DESCRIPTION

“I didn’t make a record. I couldn’t be bothered to make a record. It would have been too difficult. It was easier not to make a record,” writes David Shrigley about his LP-sized book of song lyrics. The original Worried Noodles songbook reveals a never-ending curiosity; the lyrics are simple poetry, ironic yet somehow honest, and insistently inciting. The book merged the three spheres in Shrigley’s work ? art, book, and music ? yet it was silent.

That first edition, also released by Tomlab, sold out within just 6 months of its publication two years ago. The book found a slew of new admirers of David Shrigley’s work in pop music circles, wherein the idea of adapting these songs to music was recognized as something that needed to happen.

In collaboration with David Shrigley, Tomlab gathered a diverse selection of musicians and bands from the unknown to the legendary to receive a copy of the book. Many were already familiar with David Shrigley’s work, and some are among his most devoted fans. Those who did not know of his work instantly fell in love with his quirky drawings and words. All of the artists wished to join this collaboration and delivered their stellar songcraft! During the process of the collaboration, Shrigley found perhaps the best words to describe the strong enthusiasm present in the project: “Now we have opened the can of worms we have to deal with the consequences.” The can now counts 39 worms ? all exclusives!

ALBUM DESCRIPTION

Invisible Shield is a compilation of work by current K artists. All tracks are culled from the individual artists’ recent releases, except the Microphones song “Untitled”, recorded live on their recent tour to Japan. Invisible Shield is an unofficial and unassuming support network of artists, pals and mutual admirers. Invisible Shield is a loose and ill-defined process for creating and maintaining a community by interweaving the creative processes of an indeterminate number of kindred spirits. Invisible Shield is not a band. Some of you may have noticed that for the last few years, the names of “band members on many a K releases cross-over and cross pollinate; Phil of the Microphones is the drummer in Old Time Relijun and produces some recordings by Wolf Colonel and Mirah; Mirah also sings and plays on records by Calvin Johnson, Dennis Driscoll and the Microphones; Kyle of Little Wings also sings and plays on the Microphones new album; Adam Forkner of (((VERSION))) and Yume Bitsu plays on records by Dub Narcotic Sound System and Wolf Colonel and produces recordings by both bands as well as Little Wings; Khaela Maricich of the Blow also records with Dennis Driscoll and has designed record covers for the Microphones and Mirah; and everyone tours with everyone else, plays and sings back-up and generally wrecks havoc at each others’ shows. This phenomena is what we refer to as the Invisible Shield: a bunch of folks who follow their own artistic vision but who feed off the artistic energy of their compatriots. Although this kind of collaboration and mutual inspiration has been true at K since its origins, the current regime has just left the kettle on high and turned the intimacy factor up to 11.

In 1968, The Living Theatre, led by Julian Beck and Judith Malina, triumphantly returned to America from years of self-imposed exile in Europe with their theatrical breakthrough Paradise Now. The play introduces the practice of collective creation, dissolving the boundaries of human interactions and forging a harmony between the actors and audience. Of this process, Julian Beck writes, 'Collective creation is the secret weapon of the people ... This play is a voyage from the many to the one and from the one to the many. It's a spiritual voyage and a political voyage, a voyage for the actors and the spectators. The play is a vertical ascent toward permanent revolution, leading to revolutionary action here and now. The revolution of which the play speaks is the beautiful, non-violent, anarchist revolution. The purpose of the play is to lead to a state of being in which non-violent revolutionary action is possible.'"
